TO REPORT A CRIME CALL

YOU CAN HELP PREVENT CRIME
Many Crimes Are “Crimes of Opportunity.”
Don’t Give Criminals a Chance to Act.
Follow These Tips:

PREVENT BIKE THEFT
  • Always lock your bike to a secure post or fence.  Remove the seat if possible when leaving it for an extended period.
  • Use a heavy-duty lock. Cable locks are easy for a thief to cut.
  • Take a picture of your bike(s) for future reference in case of theft.
  • Record the bike serial number & keep it in a safe place.
  • When parked & locked, remove items from luggage racks or bags.
BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. STAY ALERT.
  • Who is around you? Are they watching you?
  • Are you able to tell emergency personnel where you are?
  • When shopping, keep your valuables close at hand. (purses, gym bags, packages, etc.)
  • do not display a lot of cash when paying.
  • Always lock your car when not occupied. Never leave your car with the engine running.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car visible from the outside. Lock items in the trunk or under the seat before you reach your destination.
  • When home, keep your garage door closed, especially overnight. Don’t leave keys in the car.
BE WARY OF PHONE SCAMS
Phone scams can feel threatening and urgent. Rather than give into the demands of the caller, hang up the phone. Call a family member, accountant, attorney, or utility directly. Verify what the caller has said before taking any action.
Common phone scams include:
  • The caller announces that you won the lottery.
  • A law enforcement officer tells you that you have to pay bail for a family member.
  • A hospital calls asking you to pay for a family member's emergency operation.
  • The IRS claims that you owe back taxes and if you don't pay over the phone, they will seize your property.
  • A utility company claims you have unpaid bills, and your services are due to be cut off.
  • A person calls posing as a grandchild and asks for help with a financial problem.
BE WARY!
BE WARY OF INTERNET SCAMS
  • NEVER agree to buy gift cards unless you initiate the purchase
  • Watch for fake shipping confirmations.  Contact the vendor yourself to check on a shipment.
  • Be wary of a note saying your identity has been stolen.  Check it out independently of the note.
  • Don’t return a phone call to a number you have not asked for or do not have in your directory.
  • NEVER give your Social Security number or PIN (Personal Identity Number) to anyone who asks for it.  Only provide it if you are SURE it is safe.
  • Nobody gives away money.  Don’t fall for claims that you have won a prize or gift.
BE WARY.  ALWAYS
